A Brief History

Shurtleff Stormwater Solutions is the present day environmental sales arm of the W.H. Shurtleff Company.

The Company was founded in 1890 by William Harry Shurtleff as a distributor of canned goods, smoked fish and molasses on Portland's Union Wharf. By the turn of the century the Company was importing salt from the Caribbean for the growing fishing industry. With its own fleet of schooners to deliver salt and a new location in Bangor the Company grew and expanded its salt business.

After World War II, William Harry's son in-law Parker Poole, assisted by his sons William and Parker, diversified into industrial chemicals and added highway de-icing to the Company's lines. Culverts and related construction products and retail ice melters were added in the 1960's to round out the Municipal, Wholesale and Industrial offerings.

The 1980's provided exceptional growth in Northern New England followed by technological innovations and distributive consolidations. A new plant in South Portland replaced six smaller branches and was the beginning of major changes in the Chemical Industry.

In 1990 Malcolm Poole became president and represents the fourth generation of family management. Regulations, market changes and logistics encouraged the sale of the Industrial Chemical Division to Monson Companies in 1996 and the Salt Division to Monson Companies in 2004.

As W.H. Shurtleff turns 115 years old, Shurtleff Stormwater Solutions is poised to address the environmental and civil engineering needs of New England. We are a company of great people who are committed to caring for and serving our customers. Please contact us as we will be happy to discuss your project and offer our assistance.
